Wayanad has a good network of roads, and is well-connected with most of the major cities in South India. Visitors can avail regular buses from these cities or can opt for private vehicles to reach Wayanad.
Nilambur Road serves as the nearest railway station to this gorgeous hill station. Since the station is located around 51km away, visitors can reach Wayanad easily from here. Following the Nilambur Road, Koyilandy Train Station at a distance of 53km serves as the second nearest railway station to reach Wayanad.
Wayanad do not have its own airport. Calicut International Airport at a distance of 61km, and Mysore Airport at a distance of 87km serves as the two nearest airports to reach Wayanad.
Chembra Peak (Chembra Mala) is one of the highest peak in the Western Ghats and the highest peak in Wayanad hills, at 2,100 m (6,890 ft) above sea level. Chembra is located near the town of Meppadi and is 8 km (5 mi) south of Kalpetta. It is part of the Wayanad hill ranges in Western Ghats. Visits to this peak organized by ‘The Chempra Peak VSS’ under the control of South Wayanad Forest Development Agency, guides are provided for trekking. Chembra Peak is accessible by foot from Meppady. District Tourism Promotion Council provides guides and trekking equipment on hire charges to tourists. Banasura Sagar Dam and Banasura Hill is also nearby.
Located 29 km away from Kalpetta in Wayanad district, Meenmutty waterfalls is considered as one of the largest waterfalls in the Kalpetta region and the second largest in Kerala. Banasura Sagar Dam, which impounds the Karamanathodu tributary of the Kabini River, is part of the Indian Banasurasagar Project consisting of a dam and a canal project started in 1979. The dam has become a popular tourist destination. Many people visit the place to go trekking at the Banasura Hill & speed boating at Banasura Sagar Dam. The Banasura Hill Resort, located about 20 km from the dam was rated as Asia’s largest Earthen Resort by BBC. Speed & pedal boats are available & are major hits with tourists. Speed boat ride, in particular, is an exhilarating experience & not to be missed.
History has it that the caves were first discovered by the then superintendent of police of the Malabar District, Fred Fawcett, on his hunting trip. He found the caves to the west of Edakkal Mala and when he explored it further, he found that the caves were the habitat of the Neolithic people. The Edakkal Caves are famous for their paintings of figures: human, animals, symbols and letters. These paintings are believed to date back to the 6000 BC. The etchings and prehistoric line drawings are a testament to the culture and lives of those who lived in the caves years ago.
The most important tourist destination in Wayanad, Pookot Lake is a natural fresh water lake nestled amidst evergreen forests and wooded slopes. It is located 3km south of Vythiri town, is the most frequented tourist spot in the entire Wayanad district of Kerala. Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary is a rainforest wich connects Nagarhole and Bandipur parks in Karnataka and Mudumalai in Tamil Nadu. You can sight here maruthi, karimaruthi, rosewood, venteak, vengal etc. Go and get excited with the sight of wild animal like elephant, tiger, panthers, jungle cats, civet cats, monkeys, wild dogs etc. The sanctuary is also blessed with its endless population of birds like peacocks, babblers, cuckoos, owls, woodpeckers, jungle fowls etc.
Soochipara Falls also known as Sentinel Rock Waterfalls is a three-tiered waterfall in Vellarimala, Wayanad, India. It is surrounded by deciduous, evergreen and montane forests. The 15-20 minute drive from Meppadi to Sentinel Rock Waterfalls has views of a number of Wayanad’s tea estates. The Sentinel Rock Waterfalls is 200 metres (656 feet) and offers a cliff face that is used for rock climbing. Best time to visit Soochipara waterfall is during monsoon season as you can see the waterfall at its fullest. The destination is well connected to nearby places. So, you will not find any difficulty to reach here. You can sight a pool beneath this falls and here you can go for bathing.
Pakshipathalam Bird Sanctuary is located deep within the lush forests in the Brahmagiri hills in Wayanad district of Kerala. Trekking is the only mode of reaching Pakshipathalam and the trekking route runs through 17 km of wilderness. Inside the bird sanctuary, tourists can see a flock of birds chirping and guarding the sky, multiple herbs and trees that possess medicinal properties, and orchid plantation. Within the boundary of the bird sanctuary, there is a temple and watchtower to help tourists navigate their way. There is a cave here which is believed to be used by saints of olden times. Its undulating hills are also famous as a trekking site.
